You may have heard information regarding changes to the federal Public Charge Rule which was to take effect on October 15, 2019.  Multiple federal courts have postponed the Public Charge regulation from going into effect until there is final resolution in the cases.  The term “Public Charge” is used in immigration law to refer to a person who is dependent on the government for support.  The changes to the existing rule will now make it more difficult to apply for permanent residency or earn a visa if an applicant is dependent on government aid such as the cash aid, food stamps, housing assistance, and Medicaid.

Benefits of PreK–12 public education are not impacted by the Public Charge Rule.  In an effort to inform and reassure RUSD families, we will offer two Information Forums in collaboration with Community Partners.  Two sessions will be held on Monday, November 18, 2019 from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the César E. Chávez Community Center.  The Forum will offer families an opportunity to acquire current information, legal consultation, apply for health benefits, and obtain community resources.

RUSD continues to provide a Safe Learning Zone for each and every student.  It is important that families continue completing meal applications and applying for school and community programs.  We ask that you help us promote the Information Forum through your communications with families and staff.
